Moles
There are estimated to be 35-40 million moles in the UK and the mole that lives with us is known as the common or European mole.
Mole is the only mammal to live solely underground and they achieve this because they have a greater proportion of red blood cells than other mammals. This helps them to live in an environment where oxygen levels are low, typically 7%.
Male moles are called ‘boars’ and female moles are called ‘sows’. A group of moles is called a ‘labour’.
Moles measure around 14 centimeters in length and have a 2.8-centimeter tail. Moles are built highly adapted for their underground digging way of life. A mole can dig its way through an amazing 14 meters of soil in just one hour.
They sleep, feed, and breed in their tunnels. Moles occasionally appear above ground at the top of one of their characteristic molehills, and even then usually only the head and the pink fleshy snout is revealed.
Moles can wreak havoc on pristine lawns, flower borders and vegetable patches on the quest for worms.
